Hadith 1657

Yazid bin Hayan says: I, Husain bin Sabrah, and Umar bin Muslim went to Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him). When we sat with him, Husain said, “O Zaid! You have attained great virtue. You saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), heard his hadith, participated in jihad with him, and prayed with him. You have earned much reward. Narrate to us some hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” He said, “O my nephew! I have grown very old and much time has passed, and some things which I used to remember from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) I have forgotten. Accept whatever I narrate, and do not trouble me for what I do not narrate.” Then Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up one day to deliver a sermon at a place called Khumm, between Makkah and Madinah, at the water of Khumm. He praised Allah and glorified Him, and gave admonition and advice. Then he said, “After this, O people! I am a human being. Soon the messenger of my Lord (the angel of death) will come to me and I will accept (his call). I am leaving among you two weighty things. The first is the Book of Allah, in which is guidance and light. So hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it firmly.” Thus, he encouraged adherence to the Book of Allah. Then he said, “The second thing is my Ahl al-Bayt (household). I remind you of Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt, I remind you of Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt, I remind you of Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt,” three times. Husain asked, “O Zaid! Who are the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Are his noble wives not among the Ahl al-Bayt?” Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The noble wives are also among the Ahl al-Bayt, but the Ahl al-Bayt are those upon whom zakat is forbidden.” Husain asked, “Who are they?” Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “They are the descendants of Ali, Aqeel, Ja’far, and Abbas.” Husain asked, “Is charity forbidden for all of them?” Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Yes.”
