Narrated from Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a marriage proposal to the daughter of Abu Jahl, while the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), was in his marriage. When Sayyidah Fatimah az-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her) heard this news, she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "People say about you that you do not get angry for the sake of your daughters, and here is Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who is going to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl." Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited the testimony of faith and then said, "I married my daughter (Sayyidah Zaynab, may Allah be pleased with her) to Abul-As ibn Rabi', and he spoke to me truthfully. And Fatimah bint Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is a part of my flesh, and I dislike that people put her to trial (meaning, if Ali marries again, perhaps Fatimah, out of jealousy, might say something against her husband or disobey him and become sinful). By Allah! The daughter of the Messenger of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah will not be together with one man." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) abandoned the proposal (i.e., he gave up the intention to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl).
