`Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that` when Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, the well-known hypocrite, died, his son Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), son of Abdullah bin Ubayy, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and requested, "O Messenger of Allah, please give your shirt for my father's shroud." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it. Then he said, "Please lead the funeral prayer for him." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray over him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) held onto the garment of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will you pray over him even though Allah has forbidden you to pray over him?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Allah has given me the choice: 'Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them' (At-Tawbah: 80). So I will ask more than seventy times." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Indeed, he was a hypocrite." Yet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over him. Then the verse was revealed: "Do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave" (At-Tawbah: 84). (Thus, Allah approved the opinion of Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him.)
