‘Ammar, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, says: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), “How old was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he passed away?” He said, “I did not think that you, being from his people, would not know this.” I said, “I asked people, but they differed in this matter, so I thought it better to hear your statement about it.” Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, “Do you know how to calculate?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Remember forty years, for at that age he (peace and blessings be upon him) became a Prophet. Now add fifteen, for the time he (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah, sometimes in safety and sometimes in fear. Now add ten more, which passed after the migration to Madinah (so altogether it becomes sixty-five years). And before this, the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) has passed that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away at the age of sixty years. (See Hadith: 1556).”
