Hadith 1582

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was the best in character among all people. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told me to go for an errand, so I said, "By Allah, I will not go," but in my heart, I intended to go for the task he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had ordered. (According to the habit of childhood, I outwardly refused.) Eventually, I went out until I met some boys who were playing in the market (probably I started watching them, and thus got delayed in the task). Suddenly, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came from behind and held me by the neck. I looked towards him and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was smiling. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "O Unais!" (This is a diminutive form of Anas, said affectionately by the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "Did you go where I told you to go?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah! I am going." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, I served the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for nine years, and I do not remember that for any task which I did, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Why did you do this?' or for any task which I did not do, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Why did you not do it?'"
