Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I and my two companions came, and due to hardship (such as hunger, etc.), our eyesight and hearing had weakened. We would present ourselves to the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but none would accept us. Finally, we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he took us to his house. There were three goats there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Milk them, all of us will drink, and then we would milk them, and each of us would drink his share and leave the share of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come at night and greet in such a voice that the sleeping one would not wake, but the awake one would hear. Then he would go to the mosque, pray, then come to his milk and drink it.
One night, after I had drunk my share, Satan incited me. Satan said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) goes to the Ansar, they give him gifts, and whatever he needs, he gets. What need does he have for this one sip of milk? Finally, I came and drank that milk. When the milk settled in my stomach and I was sure that now that milk would not be found, then Satan made me regret and said: Woe to you, what have you done? You have drunk the share of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Now when he comes and does not find the milk, he will curse you, and both your world and Hereafter will be ruined.
I was wrapped in a sheet; when I covered my feet, my head would be uncovered, and when I covered my head, my feet would be uncovered. I could not sleep, while my companions slept, and they had not done what I had done. Finally, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, greeted as usual, then went to the mosque and prayed, then came to the milk, opened the vessel, and found nothing in it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards the sky. I thought now he will curse, and I am ruined. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Feed the one who feeds me, and give drink to the one who gives me drink.
Hearing this, I tied my sheet tightly, took a knife, and went to the goats to slaughter the fattest one for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw that its udder was full of milk. Then I saw that the udders of the other goats were also full of milk. I took a vessel of the household of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which they did not usually milk (i.e., they did not wish to milk in it). I milked into it until foam rose to the top (so much milk came out), and I brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Did you drink your share of milk at night or not? I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please drink the milk. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drank and gave it to me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Drink more. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drank more, then gave it to me. When I knew that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was satisfied and I had received his supplication, then I laughed until, out of joy, I fell to the ground.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Miqdad! Did you do something bad? What is it? I said: O Messenger of Allah! This is what happened to me, and I committed this mistake. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The milk of that time (which came down unusually) was Allah’s mercy. Why did you not tell me earlier? We would have awakened our two companions so they could also drink this milk. I said: By Him who sent you with the true word, now I do not care, since you have received Allah’s mercy and I have received it with you, whoever else receives it.
