‘Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Abi Sa’id Khudri narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards the mosque of Quba on a Monday. When we reached the locality of Banu Salim, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the door of Sayyiduna ‘Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and called him. He came out dragging his lower garment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We have put him in a hurry. Sayyiduna ‘Itban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! If a person hastily separates from his wife and no semen is discharged, what is the ruling (i.e., is ghusl obligatory or not)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: The use of water is due to the emission of water (i.e., ghusl becomes obligatory only when semen is discharged).
