Hadith 1487

It is narrated from Ibn Shihab that Sayyiduna Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) reported to him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "One's illness does not infect another." (This means that no illness is transmitted by itself; if it affects anyone else, it is by Allah's command. That is why it has been ordered not to bring a sick camel near a healthy camel.) And Abu Salamah also narrated this hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A sick camel should not be brought near healthy camels." Abu Salamah said that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate both these ahadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but afterwards he stopped narrating the hadith that "illness is not contagious" and continued to narrate that "a sick camel should not be brought near a healthy camel." Harith bin Abi Dhibab, who was a cousin of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), said to him: "O Abu Hurairah! You used to narrate another hadith along with this one, but now you do not narrate it. That hadith is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'One's illness does not infect another.'" Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) denied it and said: "I do not recognize this hadith, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did say that a sick camel should not be brought near a healthy camel." Harith argued with him to such an extent that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said something in the Abyssinian language. Then he asked Harith: "Do you understand what I said?" Harith replied: "No." Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I just said that I refuse to narrate this hadith." Abu Salamah said: "By my life! Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate to us this hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'One's illness does not infect another.' Then I do not know whether Abu Hurairah forgot this hadith or considered one hadith to have abrogated the other." (In Sahih Bukhari, there is no mention of abrogation, rather it is only stated that we have not seen Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) forget any hadith except this one.)
