Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that one’s illness does not transfer to another, and there is no reality in Safar and Haamah, a Bedouin said, “O Messenger of Allah! What about the camels? They are as clean as deer in the sand, then a mangy camel comes among them and makes all of them mangy?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Then who made the first camel mangy?” In another narration, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is no contagion, no bad omen, no Safar, and no Haamah.” (By contagion is meant the transference of disease from one to another, by bad omen is meant taking ill fortune from something, by Safar is meant considering the month of Safar as unlucky, as some people still do today, and by Haamah is meant the owl, which the Arabs considered unlucky.)
