Hadith 1421

Abu Burdah narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "Peace be upon you, Abdullah bin Qais has come." But he did not permit him to enter. Then he said, "Peace be upon you, Abu Musa is here. Peace be upon you, this Ash'ari has come." (First he mentioned his name, then his kunyah, then his lineage, so that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would have no doubt.) Eventually, he returned. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Bring him back to me." He returned and said, "O Abu Musa, why did you leave? We were busy with work." He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, 'Seeking permission is three times; if permission is granted, then good, otherwise return.'" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Bring a witness for this hadith, otherwise I will do this and that (meaning, I will punish you)." Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), upon hearing this, left. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If Abu Musa finds a witness, you will find him by the pulpit in the evening; if he does not find a witness, you will not find him by the pulpit." When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the pulpit in the evening, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) was present. Sayyiduna Umar said, "O Abu Musa! What do you say, did you find a witness?" He said, "Yes, Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) is present." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Indeed, he is trustworthy." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abu al-Tufail!" (This is the kunyah of Ibn Abi Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him)), "What does Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) say?" Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say," then he supported Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O son of Khattab, do not be a torment upon the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (i.e., do not trouble them)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Glory be to Allah! When I heard a hadith, I thought it better to verify it." (And my intention was never, God forbid, to trouble the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor did I mean that Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) was lying.)
