Sahl bin Sa’d says that Abu Usaid’s son Mundhir, when he was born, was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him on his thigh, and (his father) Abu Usaid was sitting. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became occupied with something in front of him, so Abu Usaid ordered, and the child was taken off the Prophet’s thigh. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed, he asked, “Where is the child?” Abu Usaid said, “O Messenger of Allah! We have taken him away.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “What is his name?” Abu Usaid said, “Such-and-such name.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No, his name is Mundhir.” From that day, they named him Mundhir.
