It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when I came to Najran, the (Ansari) people there objected to me, saying, “You recite: ‘O sister of Harun’ (__QUR_N__) (i.e., Maryam is called the sister of Harun), whereas (Sayyiduna Harun was the brother of Musa, peace be upon them) and Musa (peace be upon him) was so long before ‘Isa (peace be upon him). (So how could Maryam be the sister of Harun?)” When I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I asked him about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “(This is not the same Harun who was the brother of Musa.) It was the custom of Bani Isra’il (just as it is the custom of everyone now) that they would name people after the prophets and the righteous who came before.”
