Hadith 14

Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Rabee’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan bin Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) that:
I came to Madinah and met ‘Itbaan, and I said, “There is a hadith that has reached me from you (so narrate it).” ‘Itbaan said, “My eyesight has become weak (in another narration it is mentioned that he became blind, and perhaps weakness of sight is meant). I sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I wish you would come to my house and pray at a certain place so that I may make that place my prayer area (i.e., so that I may always pray there, and this request was made because, due to the weakness of his eyesight, it had become difficult for him to come to the Prophet’s Mosque). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and brought with him whomever Allah willed from among his companions. He entered and began to pray, and his companions were talking among themselves. (The mention of the hypocrites came up, so they began to discuss their condition and mention their bad deeds and bad habits.) Then they mentioned the great hypocrite Maalik bin Dukhshum (or Maalik bin Dukhayshum, or Maalik bin Dukhshan, or Dukhayshan), and they wanted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to supplicate against him so that he would die or some calamity would befall him (so it is understood that wishing for the destruction of evildoers is not wrong). Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer and said, “Does he (i.e., Maalik bin Dukhshum) not bear witness that there is no true deity except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?” The companions said, “He says this with his tongue, but he does not have certainty of it in his heart.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever bears witness with a true heart that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, then he will not enter the Fire, or the Fire will not consume him.” Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I found this hadith very pleasing, so I said to my son to write it down, and so he wrote it.”
