Hadith 1397

Sidna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a child was born to one of us and he named him Muhammad. His people said to him, "We will not let you keep this name; you are naming him after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So that man carried his child on his back and brought him to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, a son has been born to me and I have named him Muhammad, but my people say, 'We will not let you do this; you are naming him after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Name him with my name, but do not use my kunyah (i.e., Abu al-Qasim), for I am al-Qasim; I distribute among you (knowledge of religion, spoils of war, etc.)."
