Shuraih bin Hani narrates: I came to Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask her about wiping over the socks, so she said: "Ask the son of Abu Talib (that is, Ali, may Allah be pleased with him), for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." We asked him, and he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed the duration of wiping for a traveler as three days and three nights, and for a resident as one day and one night."
