Hadith 1335

`Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that` Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw ‘Atard al-Taymi in the market with a silk garment (for sale), and he was a person who used to go to kings and receive money from them. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! I saw ‘Atard with a silk garment in the market; if you buy it and wear it when the Arab delegations come, it would be appropriate. The narrator said: I think he also said that you could wear it on Fridays as well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Only he will wear silk in this world who has no share in the Hereafter. Then, after that, some silk garments came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he gave one garment each to Sayyiduna Umar, Usama bin Zayd, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them all), and said: Tear it and make headscarves for your women. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) brought his garment and said: O Messenger of Allah! You sent this garment to me, and just yesterday you said what you said about ‘Atard’s garment? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I did not send this garment to you for your own wearing, but so that you may benefit from it (by selling it). And Sayyiduna Usama (may Allah be pleased with him) wore his garment and went out, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him in such a way that he realized the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was displeased. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Why do you look at me? You are the one who sent this garment to me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I did not send it to you so that you wear it yourself, but so that you tear it and make headscarves for your women.
