It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zayd bin Asim Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, and he was a companion, that people said to him, "Show us how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution." So he called for a vessel (of water), tilted it, and first poured water over both his hands. (From this, it is understood that at the beginning of ablution, it is recommended to wash both hands including the fingers, before putting the hands into the water.) And he washed them three times. Then he put his hand into the vessel and took it out, and with a single handful rinsed his mouth and put water into his nose. Then he did the same three times. Then he put his hand in and took it out and washed his face three times. (In the narration of Bukhari, it is mentioned that he joined both hands together to take water and washed his face three times.) Then he put his hand into the vessel and took it out and washed both his hands up to the elbows twice each. Then he put his hand into the vessel and took it out and wiped his head, first moving both hands from the front to the back, then from the back to the front (i.e., returning to the forehead). Then he washed both feet including the ankles. After that, he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform ablution in this manner.
