Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: When you release your (hunting) dog, then take the name of Allah (and release it). Then if it catches your prey and you find it alive, then slaughter it. And if it kills it and does not eat from it, then you may eat it. And if another dog joins your dog and the animal has been killed, then do not eat it, because you do not know which one killed it. And when you shoot an arrow taking the name of Allah, then if your prey (after being struck by the arrow) disappears for a day, and afterwards you find no mark on it except that of your arrow, then if you wish, you may eat it. And if you find it drowned in water, then do not eat it.
