Hadith 1222

Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when Muslim women used to migrate, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would test them according to this verse: “O Prophet! When believing women come to you to give you the pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor will they steal, nor will they commit adultery... till the end” (Al-Mumtahina: 12). Then, any woman who acknowledged these matters would, in effect, acknowledge the pledge (i.e., the pledge would be complete). And when they would acknowledge with their tongues before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would say, “Go, I have taken your pledge.” By Allah, the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never touched the hand of any woman; rather, he would take the pledge from them only verbally. Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not take any pledge from women except what Allah had commanded, and the Prophet’s palm never touched the palm of any woman; rather, he would only say it verbally, and when they acknowledged, he would say, “I have taken your pledge.”
