Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Each of you is a guardian, and each of you will be questioned about his subjects. (By guardian is meant administrator, overseer, and protector.) Then, whoever is a king is a guardian over the people, and he will be questioned about his subjects (whether he fulfilled their rights, protected their lives and property or not). And a man is a guardian over the members of his household, and he will be questioned about them. And a woman is a guardian over her husband’s house and children, and she will be questioned about them. And a servant is a guardian over his master’s wealth, and he will be questioned about it. In short, each of you is a guardian, and each of you will be questioned about his subjects.
