Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the day of Uhud (when the disbelievers prevailed and the Muslims were overpowered) was left alone; seven men from the Ansar and two from the Quraysh remained with him. The disbelievers attacked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he said, "Who will repel them from us? He will have Paradise or my companionship in Paradise." One of the Ansar advanced and fought until he was martyred. (The disbelievers) attacked again, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Who will repel them from us? He will have Paradise or he will be my companion in Paradise." Another Ansari advanced and fought until he was martyred. This continued until all seven Ansar were martyred. (SubhanAllah, how great was the devotion and loyalty of the Ansar! From here, one should understand the rank and status of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.) Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "We did not do justice to our companions (or our companions did not do justice to us)." (In the first case, it would mean that justice was not done, i.e., the Quraysh remained seated while the Ansar were martyred; the Quraysh should also have gone forth. In the second case, it would mean that our companions who fled to save their lives did not do justice, as their brothers were martyred and they were concerned with saving themselves.)
