‘Sayyiduna Mus‘ab bin Sa‘d narrates from his father Sa‘d (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Four verses were revealed about me. Once, I found a sword among the spoils of war, brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Grant this to me.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Put it down.” Then I stood up (and repeated my request), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Put it back where you took it from.” Then I got up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Give me this sword.” He said, “Put it down.” Then (for the fourth time) I stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah! Give me this sword as a share from the spoils of war. Will I remain like a poor person?” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Put it back where you took it from.” Then this verse was revealed: “They ask you (O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war are for Allah and His Messenger.” (Al-Anfal: 1). (In this hadith, only one of the four verses is mentioned.)
