`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that` the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said: "These two are being punished, and not for something major. One of them used to carry tales (i.e., spread gossip to cause discord), and the other did not take care to protect himself from urine." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a fresh date-palm branch, split it into two, and placed one piece on each grave. He said: "Perhaps their punishment will be lightened as long as these branches do not dry."
