Hadith 1089

Sulaiman bin Yasar says that when the people departed from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), Natil, who was from the people of Syria (Natil bin Qais Kharami, he was from Palestine and a Tabi'i, his father was a companion), said, "O Sheikh! Narrate to me a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Alright, I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he used to say: The first person whose case will be decided on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. When he will be brought before Allah, Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will recognize them. Allah will ask, 'What did you do for them?' He will say, 'I fought in Your way until I was martyred.' Allah will say, 'You have lied. You fought so that people would call you brave, and you were called brave.' Then it will be ordered, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.

And there will be a man who acquired knowledge, taught it, and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought before Allah. Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will recognize them. Then it will be said, 'What did you do for them?' He will say, 'I acquired knowledge, taught it, and recited the Qur'an.' Allah will say, 'You have lied. You acquired knowledge so that people would call you a scholar, and you recited the Qur'an so that people would call you a reciter. In the world, you were called a scholar and a reciter.' Then it will be ordered, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.

And there will be a man to whom Allah had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought before Allah. Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will recognize them. Then Allah will ask, 'What did you do for them?' He will say, 'I did not leave any way in which You like wealth to be spent except that I spent in it for Your sake.' Allah will say, 'You are lying. You spent so that people would call you generous, and people called you generous in the world.' Then it will be ordered, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell."
