‘Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) received a piece of land in Khaybar, so he came to consult the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it and said, “O Messenger of Allah! I have received a piece of land in Khaybar, and I have never received any wealth better than this. What do you command regarding it?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you wish, withhold the ownership of the land (i.e., keep the original land) and give its produce as charity.” Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave it as charity on the condition that the original land would neither be sold, nor bought, nor inherited, nor given as a gift, and its benefit would be for the poor, relatives, slaves (i.e., to help in their emancipation), travelers, needy people, or for hosting guests. And whoever manages it may eat from it according to custom or feed a friend, but should not accumulate wealth from it (i.e., should not use it with the intention of amassing money).
