Hadith 10

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (or Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id, there is doubt in this narration from A'mash, who is the narrator of this hadith) that when the time of the Battle of Tabuk came (Tabuk is the name of a place in the land of Syria), the people suffered from severe hunger. They said, "O Messenger of Allah! If only you would permit us, we would slaughter our camels on which we bring water, eat the meat, and make oil from the fat." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do so." In the meantime, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! If we do this, the mounts will become fewer. (Instead) You should call all the people and tell them to bring whatever food they have left. Then pray to Allah to bless the food; perhaps Allah will make a way out in it (i.e., grant blessing and improvement)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Very well." Then a dining cloth was brought and spread out, and everyone's leftover food was called for. Someone brought a handful of barley, someone brought a handful of dates, someone brought a piece of bread, until all together a little was gathered on the dining cloth. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for blessing. After that, he said, "Fill your vessels with food." So all the people filled their vessels until there was not a single vessel left in the army that was not filled. Then everyone began to eat and were satisfied. Even then, some was left over. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I bear witness that there is no true deity except Allah, and I am the Messenger sent by Allah. Whoever meets Allah with faith in these two things will not be deprived of Paradise."
