Hadith 2208
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked, "Why do you not appoint a successor (caliph) after you?" He replied, "If I appoint a caliph, then those better than me before me did appoint a caliph, that is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). And if I do not appoint (a caliph), then those better than me before me, that is, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), did not appoint a caliph."
