Hadith 2033
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and a man praised him greatly. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on you, you have cut his neck (by praising him like this)." And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) repeated this sentence several times. (Then he said): "If any of you wants to praise someone unnecessarily, he should say: 'I think him to be such and such,' if he really believes him to be so, and Allah knows best about him (whether he is good or bad), and he should not say that he is good in the sight of Allah."
