Hadith 1877
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was very fond of sweets and honey, and it was his blessed habit that after performing the Asr prayer, he would go to his wives, and sometimes he would kiss and embrace one of them. (One day) he went to Umm al-Mu’minin Hafsa bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with her) and stayed there longer than usual. (Because of this) I felt jealous and inquired about the reason, so someone told me that (Umm al-Mu’minin Hafsa, may Allah be pleased with her) had been given a jar of honey as a gift by a woman from her tribe. She gave that honey to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to drink (and that is why he was delayed). I said, “By Allah! I will devise a plan.” I said to Umm al-Mu’minin Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to you, say to him, ‘Perhaps you have eaten Maghafir?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will deny it, then you should say, ‘Then why do I smell an odor from your mouth?’ When he tells you, ‘I drank honey at Hafsa’s (may Allah be pleased with her) place,’ then you should say, ‘Perhaps the bees of that (honey) sucked the sap of the ‘Urft tree,’ and I will say the same, and O Safiyyah! You should also say the same.” Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and was just standing at the door, I intended to say what you had told me out of fear of you. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came near Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her), she said to him, “O Messenger of Allah! Have you eaten Maghafir?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “No.” She said, “Then why do I smell an odor from your mouth?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Hafsa gave me a little honey to drink.” She said, “Perhaps its bee sucked the sap of the ‘Urft tree.” When he came to me, I also said the same to him, and when he went to Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), she also said the same, and when he went again to Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), she said, “O Messenger of Allah! Shall I bring you some honey to drink?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “I have no need for honey.” Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “By Allah! We have deprived the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of honey.” I said, “Be quiet (lest the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) find out).”
