Hadith 1623
‘Ubaidullah bin ‘Adi bin Khiyar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said to Wahshi, “Will you not inform us about the killing (martyrdom) of Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)?” He said, “Yes, why should I not tell you? The story of the killing of Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) is as follows: Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) killed Tu‘aymah bin ‘Adi bin Khiyar on the day of Badr. My master Jubair bin Mut‘im (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me, ‘If you kill Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in revenge for my uncle, you will be free.’ Wahshi said, ‘When the people of Quraysh set out in the year of the battle of Uhud, and ‘Uyunayn is one of the mountains of Uhud, and between Uhud and it is a valley, I also set out with the fighters. When the people had formed their battle lines, Siba‘ (bin ‘Abdul-‘Uzza) came out from the ranks and said, “Is there anyone to fight?” Wahshi says that the leader of the martyrs, Hamza bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), came out to face him and said, “O Siba‘! O son of Umm Anmar, the woman who used to circumcise women, do you oppose Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?” Wahshi said, “Then he attacked Siba‘, and Siba‘ perished as if he had never existed.” Wahshi said, “Then I lay in ambush for Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) behind a rock. When he came near me, I threw my weapon at him, and it struck him below the navel in such a way that it pierced through his buttocks. Wahshi said, “That was his last moment.” When all the Quraysh returned to Makkah, I also returned with them and stayed in Makkah. When Islam spread in Makkah (after the conquest of Makkah), I went to Ta’if. When the people of Ta’if sent envoys to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), it was said to me that he does not harm the envoys. So I went with them to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When he saw me, he said, “Are you Wahshi?” I replied, “Yes.” He said, “Was it you who martyred Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)?” I replied, “Yes, what the people have told you is the truth (i.e., I killed him at the command of my master).” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Can you hide your face from me?” Wahshi says, “I (got up and) went out from his presence.” After the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), when Musaylimah the Liar appeared (i.e., claimed prophethood), I thought I would go to the Muslims, perhaps I could kill Musaylimah and thus avenge Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). Wahshi said, “I went out with those people (whom Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had sent), and Musaylimah’s situation was what it was (i.e., he had a large group with him).” Wahshi says, “Once I saw Musaylimah standing in a gap in a wall, looking like a gray camel with disheveled hair. I threw the same spear (with which I had martyred Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)) at his chest, and it pierced through both his shoulders. Then an Ansari ran towards Musaylimah and struck his skull with a sword (i.e., severed his head).”
