Hadith 1564
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (he was hungry), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a message to his wives (asking if there was anything to eat), but they replied that they had nothing except water. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who will take this man with him or host him?" Then a man from among the Ansar said, "I will (take him)." Then he (took him and) went to his wife and said, "This is the guest of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), honor him." She said, "We have only enough food for the children." So he said, "Prepare the food, light the lamp, and when the children ask for food, put them to sleep." So she cooked the food, lit the lamp, and put the children to sleep. Then she got up as if to fix the lamp, and then turned it off, and made it appear as if both of them were eating. Both of them spent the night hungry. In the morning, the Ansari went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah laughed at or was pleased with your action last night." Then Allah revealed this verse: "They give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need themselves. And whoever is saved from the greed of his own soul, it is those who are successful." __QUR_N__ __XREF_N__ __REF_N__
