Hadith 1158
Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that among the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) there were two groups: one group included Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha, Hafsa, Safiyya, and Sawda (may Allah be pleased with them), and the other group included Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) and the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Muslims knew that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (the truthful, pure, and chaste) the most. So, when any of them had a gift and wanted to give it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they would hold it back until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and then the one bringing the gift would deliver it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the house of Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha.

At this, the group of Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) discussed the matter and said to Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her): “Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to tell whoever wants to give him a gift to do so wherever he may be among his wives.” So Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) conveyed what the other wives had said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not reply to her. Then the wives asked Umm Salama if she had received a reply, and she said, “I did not get any reply.” The wives said to her, “Ask him again.” When her turn came again, she asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but again he did not reply. The wives asked her again, “Did you get any reply?” She said, “He did not give me any reply.” Then the wives said, “Ask him again so that he may reply to you.” So when her turn came, she asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: “Do not trouble me regarding Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), for by Allah, no revelation comes to me in the garment of any wife except Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).” Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “O Messenger of Allah! I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for causing you any distress.”

After that, the wives called Sayyida Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and sent her to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to say: “Your wives ask you, by Allah, to be just concerning the daughter of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).” So she conveyed this to him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O my daughter! Do you not love what I love?” She said, “Yes, indeed, I love what you love.” So Sayyida Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her) returned to the wives and told them what had happened. The wives said to her, “Go again to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),” but she refused to go again.

Then the wives sent Umm al-Mu’minin Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), who came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke harshly, saying: “Your wives ask you, by Allah, to be just concerning the daughter of Ibn Abi Quhafah (i.e., Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her),” and she raised her voice until she spoke harshly to Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in her presence. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to see if she would respond. (The narrator says) Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) began to reply to her until she silenced Umm al-Mu’minin Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: “Why not! She is the daughter of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).”
