Hadith 1133
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at Dhul-Hulaifah. The people felt hungry, then they found some camels and goats. Sayyiduna Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was behind, so the people hurried and slaughtered (the goats and camels) and put the pots on the fire. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered that the pots be overturned. After that, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) distributed them and considered ten goats equal to one camel. One of the camels from among them ran away, and the people chased after it. It tired them out, and there were few horses with the people. Then one man struck it with an arrow, and Allah stopped it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Among these animals, some are as wild as wild animals, so if any of them overpowers you, do the same with it.” I (Rafi’) said: We fear the enemy may come upon us tomorrow, and we do not have knives, so can we slaughter with a piece of bamboo? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whatever causes blood to flow, and Allah’s name is mentioned upon it (at the time of slaughter), eat of it, provided the tool is neither a tooth nor a nail. I will explain the reality of this to you: a tooth is a bone (and it is not correct to slaughter with bone), and a nail is the slaughtering tool of the Abyssinians (disbelievers), and using it would be resembling them.”
