Hadith 1057
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Among the people before you, three men set out together (for some purpose) until they reached a cave at night and entered it. (Coincidentally) a rock rolled down from the mountain and blocked the mouth of the cave. So they said, 'Nothing can save you from this rock except that you supplicate to Allah by means of your righteous deeds.' So one of them said, 'O Allah! My parents were old, and I never gave milk to my children or my slaves before them. One day, I was delayed due to some work, and when I came to them, they had already fallen asleep. So I milked their evening milk and held the vessel in my hand, but I found them sleeping. I did not like to give any to my family or slaves before them, so I waited, with the bowl in my hand, waiting for them to wake up until morning came. Then they woke up and drank their evening milk at that time. O Allah! If I did this only seeking Your pleasure, then remove from us the situation we are in because of this rock.' So the rock moved a little, but they could not get out.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The second man said, 'O Allah! I had a cousin who was dearer to me than all people. I desired to commit an evil act with her, but she refused me until a year of famine came and she was in need, so she came to me. I gave her one hundred and twenty gold coins on the condition that she would not prevent me from herself. She agreed, and when I was about to have my way with her, she said, "It is not lawful for you to break the seal (of chastity) unlawfully." So when I heard this, I refrained from committing the sin with her and left her, though she was dearer to me than all people, and I did not take back the gold I had given her. O Allah! If I did this only seeking Your pleasure, then remove from us the calamity we are in.' So the rock moved a little more, but they still could not get out.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The third man said, 'O Allah! I hired some laborers and paid them their wages except for one man who did not take his wages and went away. So I invested his wages in business until it grew into a great wealth. After a long time, he came to me and said, "O servant of Allah! Give me my wages." I said to him, "All that you see of camels, cows, sheep, and slaves is from your wages." He said, "O servant of Allah! Are you mocking me?" I said, "I am not mocking you." So he took all of it and drove it away, leaving nothing behind. O Allah! If I did this only seeking Your pleasure, then remove from us the calamity we are in.' So the rock moved completely, and they came out and went on their way."
