Hadith 963
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him) and said: "He would fast one day and not fast the next day, and when he faced the enemy in the battlefield, he would not flee." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there anyone who can take responsibility for this (i.e., this practice of Dawud, peace be upon him) on my behalf (i.e., so that I may also do this)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts continuously has not really fasted." He said this twice. (Ata says that he does not know how the mention of perpetual fasting came here, but he remembered that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said this twice.)
