Hadith 884
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him):
We set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the year of Hudaybiyyah. The companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) hastily put on ihram, but I had not yet put on ihram. Then we were informed that there was an enemy at the place of Ghaiqah who wanted to fight. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded, and I (Abu Qatadah) was also with his companions. Then my companions saw a wild donkey (onager), and they began to look at each other and laugh (I realized they were laughing at the sight of game). Then I also looked up and saw the wild donkey. I chased it on my horse and shot it with an arrow, bringing it down. Then I asked those people for help, but they refused to help me (so I slaughtered it myself). Then we all ate its meat. After that, I rode my horse at full speed to search for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We became afraid that we might be separated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then (on the way) I met a man from Banu Ghifar. I asked him, "Where did you leave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" He said, "I left the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at the spring called Ta‘hn, and his intention was to rest at the place of Suqya." (After asking this, I set off) and joined the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When I reached him, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! The companions have sent me; they send you peace and Allah's mercy, and they fear that the enemy may separate them from you, so please wait for them." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did so. Then I said, "O Messenger of Allah! We hunted a wild donkey, and we have some of its meat left." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions, "Eat." Even though they were all in ihram.
