Hadith 721
Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin charity with the one who is among your family (close relatives), and the best charity is that which is given from surplus wealth. And whoever refrains from asking, Allah will keep him from asking, and whoever wants to remain self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient."

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, and at that time he (peace be upon him) was on the pulpit and he (peace be upon him) was mentioning charity and avoiding asking: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives, and the lower hand is the one that asks."
