Hadith 697
Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would finish the Fajr prayer, he would turn towards us and say: “If any of you has seen a dream during the night, let him relate it.” Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if anyone had seen a dream, he would narrate it, and then whatever Allah willed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would interpret it. According to this practice, one day the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked us: “Has any of you seen a dream?” We replied, “No.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “But I saw a dream last night in which two men came to me, took hold of my hand, and led me to a sacred land. Suddenly, I saw there a man sitting and another man standing with an iron hook in his hand. He would insert it into the mouth of the sitting man until it reached the back of his neck, tearing one side of his jaw. Then he would do the same to the other side, and while he was doing this, the first side would heal. Then he would repeat it again. I asked, ‘What is this?’ The two men replied, ‘Move on.’
We moved on until we reached a man lying flat on his back, and another man was standing at his head with a small or large stone in his hand. He would crush the head of the man lying down with the stone. When he struck him and the stone rolled away, he would go and pick it up, and by the time he returned to the man, his head would have healed and returned to its original state. Then he would strike him again. I asked, ‘What is this?’ The two men said, ‘Move on.’
So we moved on until we passed by a pit like a furnace, its mouth narrow and its bottom wide. There was a fire burning in it, and inside were naked men and women. When the fire blazed up, they would rise up until they almost came out. I asked, ‘What is this?’ The two men said, ‘Move on.’
So we moved on until we reached a river of blood, in the middle of which was a man, and on the bank of the river was another man with some stones in front of him. He was standing in front of the man in the river. Whenever the man in the river tried to come out, the other man would throw a stone at his mouth and force him back to where he was. I asked, ‘What is this?’ The two men said, ‘Move on.’
So we moved on until we reached a lush, green garden. In it was a large tree, and at its root was an old man and some children sitting. Suddenly, I saw another man near the tree, in front of whom was a fire, and he was kindling it. Then the two men took me up the tree. Inside the tree was a house, and I was made to enter it. I had never seen a house more beautiful and splendid than it. In that house were some old men, some young men, some women, and some children. Then the two men took me out of that house and made me climb another branch of the tree. In it was also a house, and I was made to enter it. This house was also very beautiful and splendid. In it were some old and young men.
When I had seen all this, I asked the two men, ‘You have made me wander all night, now tell me the reality of what I have seen.’ They replied, ‘Yes, we will tell you. The man whose jaw you saw being torn apart is a liar, who used to tell lies in the world, and his lies would be carried further until they spread throughout the world. So he will be treated like this until the Day of Resurrection. The man whose head you saw being crushed is the one to whom Allah gave knowledge of the Qur’an, but he would sleep neglectfully at night and not act upon it during the day. So he will be treated like this until the Day of Resurrection. The people you saw in the pit are adulterers. The man you saw in the river is a usurer. The old man sitting at the root of the tree was Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and the children around him are the children of people who died before reaching puberty. The man kindling the fire is Malik, the keeper of Hell. The first house you entered is the house of common Muslims, and the second house is that of the martyrs. I am Jibreel, and this is Mikaeel. Now raise your head.’
I raised my head and suddenly saw something like a cloud above me. They said, ‘This is your place.’ I said, ‘Let me enter my place.’ They said, ‘Some of your life remains, which you have not yet completed. If you had completed it, you could have entered your place.’”
