Hadith 658
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to come to visit me in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage because of an illness that had become severe for me. So I said, “You see the condition of my illness, and I am a wealthy man, and after me, I have no heir except my only daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “No.” I said, “Half?” But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “No.” I said, “A third?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “A third, and a third is still a lot. It is better that you leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them poor, begging from people. And whatever you spend seeking the pleasure of Allah, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind (in Makkah) after my companions?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “If you are left behind and do good deeds, your rank and status will only increase. Perhaps you will live a long life so that some people (i.e., Muslims) will benefit from you and some people (i.e., disbelievers) will be harmed by you. O Allah! Complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back (i.e., do not let them die in Makkah). But poor Sa’d bin Khawlah.” (The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, expressed sorrow for him) because he died in Makkah.
