Hadith 648
Narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman brought a bordered sheet as a gift to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). (Then Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) asked those present:) Do you know what a "burdah" is? They said (yes, we know, a burdah) is a "shimlah" (that is, it is called a sheet). Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said yes. The woman said: I have made it with my own hands and have brought it so that you may wear it. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) accepted it. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was also in need of clothing, so he came out and that sheet was his lower garment. Then a man praised it and said: Please give it to me. (So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave it to him.) The people said (to that man): You did not do well; the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wore it in a state of great need, and you asked him for it, and you also know that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) does not refuse a request (no matter how great his own need may be). That man replied: By Allah! I did not ask for it so that I could wear it, but I asked for it so that it would be my shroud. Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says that then that very sheet became his shroud.
