Hadith 562
Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), (once) there was a solar eclipse, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the people in prayer and (in the prayer) stood for a very long time. Then he bowed (ruku‘) and that too was very long. Then (after ruku‘) he stood again and that standing was also very long, but less than the first standing. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made a long ruku‘, and it was less than the first ruku‘. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prostrated and made a very long prostration. Then in the second rak‘ah, he did the same as he had done in the first rak‘ah. After that, he completed the prayer and by that time the sun had become clear. Then he delivered a sermon before the people, praised and glorified Allah, and said: “The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death nor because of anyone’s life. So when you see this, supplicate to Allah, declare His greatness, pray, and give charity.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah! No one is more protective than Allah that His servant or His maidservant should commit adultery. O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”
