Hadith 497
‘The Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), saw a silk garment being sold at the door of a mosque. He submitted, “O Messenger of Allah! If only you would buy this and wear it on Fridays and in the presence of delegations when they come to you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Only that person will wear it who has no share in the Hereafter.” Afterwards, several garments of the same kind of silk came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he gave one silk garment to Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah! You have given this to me, even though you had said something about the Hullah of Atarid.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I did not give it to you so that you would wear it yourself.” So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave that garment to his polytheist brother who was in Makkah, and he wore it.
