Hadith 270
Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Rabee’ Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the Ansari companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who participated in Badr, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! I find my eyesight to be weak and I also lead my people in prayer. So, when it rains, the valley that lies between me and them flows, and I cannot go to their mosque to lead them in prayer. So, O Messenger of Allah! I wish that you (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would come to me and pray in my house so that I may take that place as a prayer area.” Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, “I will do so, insha’Allah, soon.” So he says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came when the sun had risen. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sought permission to enter, so I gave him permission. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the house and had not yet sat down when he said, “In which part of your house do you wish me to pray?” So Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I pointed to a place in the house, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood there and said Allahu Akbar. We formed a row behind him. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed two rak’ahs and then gave salam. Sayyiduna ‘Itbaan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we detained him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for khazeerah (a dish made of meat and flour) which we had prepared for him. Then he says that several people from the neighborhood gathered in the house, and one of them said, “Where is Malik bin Dukhshum?” or (he said), “Where is Ibn Dukhshum?” So another among them said, “He is a hypocrite; he does not love Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Do not say this. Have you not seen that he said La ilaha illallah seeking Allah’s pleasure?” That person said, “Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) know best, but outwardly we have seen his inclination and goodwill towards the hypocrites.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has made the Fire forbidden for the person who says La ilaha illallah, seeking thereby Allah’s pleasure.”
