Hadith 78
Narrated from Amir al-Mu’minin Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him):
I and an Ansari neighbor of mine used to live in the locality of Banu Umayyah bin Zaid, which was situated at the higher part of Madinah. We used to take turns to go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). One day he would go, and one day I would go. On the day I went, I would bring him the news of that day—revelation and other matters—and on the day he went, he would do the same.
One day, my Ansari friend came (after attending the Prophet, peace be upon him, on his turn) and knocked at my door very hard and called out my name, “Is he here?” I got scared by his agitated manner and came out to him. He said, “A great event has happened (i.e., the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, has divorced his wives)!”
I went to Hafsa (Mother of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with her), and she was weeping. I asked her, “Did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) divorce you all?” She replied, “I do not know.”
Then I went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and, while standing, I asked, “Did you divorce your wives?” He replied, “No.”
At that, I exclaimed in great astonishment, “Allahu Akbar!” (How mistaken the Ansari was!)
