Hadith 43
Narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Najd, disheveled in appearance, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We could hear the humming of his voice but could not understand what he was saying. When he came closer, (we found out that) he was asking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are five prayers in the day and night. The man asked: Is there any prayer obligatory upon me other than these? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, except if you do something voluntarily (nafl). (Then) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And fasting in the month of Ramadan. He asked: Is there any other fasting obligatory upon me besides this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, except if you do it voluntarily. (Sayyiduna Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him, says) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also mentioned zakat to him. He asked: Is there any charity obligatory upon me other than this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, except if you give voluntarily. Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that then the man turned away saying: By Allah! I will neither add to these (mentioned obligations) nor decrease from them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If he is speaking the truth, he will be successful.
