Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Utbah bin Abi Waqqas had made a will to his brother (the conqueror of Persia) Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the son of Zam’ah’s slave woman is mine, so you should take him into your custody. Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the year of the conquest of Makkah came, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) took him and said, “This is my nephew; my brother made a will to me about him.” So, ‘Abd bin Zam’ah stood up and said, “He is my brother and the son of my father’s slave woman.” Then both of them came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah! This is my nephew; my brother made a will to me about him.” (‘Abd) bin Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “He is my brother, the son of my father’s slave woman, and was born on his bed.” So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O ‘Abd bin Zam’ah! The boy will go to you.” After that, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The child belongs to the (legal) owner of the bed, and the adulterer gets nothing but stones.” After that, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Umm al-Mu’minin Sawdah bint Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) (his wife): “Observe veil from him.” Because the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw some resemblance to Utbah in the boy. Thus, Umm al-Mu’minin Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) did not see the boy until she met Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
