Hadith 956

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting continuously (without breaking the fast at suhoor and iftar). So one of the Muslims said, "O Messenger of Allah! But you observe continuous fasting (i.e., you keep fasts without breaking them)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Which one of you is like me? When I sleep at night, my Lord feeds me and gives me drink." But when they did not refrain, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed continuous fasting with them for one day (i.e., ate and drank nothing), then for a second day (i.e., ate and drank nothing), and kept continuous fasts for several days. After that, the (Eid) moon appeared. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), out of displeasure at their refusal, said: "If the moon had not appeared, I would have made you fast even more." And in another narration, also from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take upon yourselves only as much worship as you have the strength for."
