Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) migrated to Madinah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with them) were afflicted with fever. The condition of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was that when he would get a fever, he would say: “Every person wakes up in his own house in the morning, and (he does not know that) death is closer to him than the strap of his sandal.” And the condition of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was that when he would get a fever, he would raise his voice and say: “Oh, if only I knew whether I would ever again spend a night in a valley surrounded by Idhkhir and Jalil (types of grass), and whether I would ever reach the springs of Majannah, and whether I would ever see Shamah and Tufail (names of mountains) again?” (Then he would also supplicate:) “O Allah! Curse Shaybah bin Rabi’ah, Utbah bin Rabi’ah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf, just as they expelled us from our homeland (Makkah) to a land of epidemic (Madinah).” Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) supplicated: “O Allah! Instill the love of Madinah in our hearts as You have instilled the love of Makkah, or even more than that. O Allah! Bless our Sa’ and our Mudd, and make the climate of Madinah suitable for us, and transfer its fever to (the area of) Juhfah (where the polytheists reside).” (Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) says: When we came to Madinah, it was the most epidemic-ridden land of Allah. She also says: At that time, foul-smelling water used to flow in the valley of Bathan.
