Hadith 89

Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave a statement on the second day of the conquest of Makkah, which my two ears heard and my heart remembered, and when you (peace be upon him) delivered this (sermon), my eyes were looking at you. You praised and glorified Allah, then said: "Allah has made Makkah (fighting and the like) sacred; people have not made it sacred. So whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, it is not permissible for him to shed blood in Makkah, nor is it permissible to cut down any tree there. Then if anyone argues for the permissibility of these things by the fighting of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Makkah, then say to him that Allah gave permission to His Messenger, but He did not give you permission, and I too was only given permission for a short period of the day, then today its sanctity has returned to what it was yesterday. So, those who are present should convey this (news) to those who are absent."
