Hadith 839

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Tamattu’ in the Farewell Hajj with ‘Umrah and Hajj together and brought the sacrificial animal with him. So he brought the sacrificial animal from Dhul-Hulaifah and first put on the Ihram for ‘Umrah, then after that put on the Ihram for Hajj. Thus, other people also performed Tamattu’ with ‘Umrah and Hajj along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his following, and some of them brought sacrificial animals and some did not. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Makkah, he said to the people: “Whoever among you has brought the sacrificial animal should avoid what is avoided in Ihram until the Hajj is completed, and whoever has not brought it should perform Tawaf of the Ka’bah and Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, cut his hair, and come out of Ihram. After that, on the seventh or eighth of Dhul-Hijjah, he should put on Ihram only for Hajj (then perform Hajj and offer sacrifice). Then whoever cannot find a sacrificial animal should fast three days during the days of Hajj and seven days when he returns home.”
